Lauren Pretorius

Lauren Pretorius is interested in the geomorphological evolution of coastal environments, sea-level reconstruction along the South African coastline, and the use of salt marsh foraminifera and sea-level proxies. Lauren’s PhD in marine geology investigated controls on the physiographic and stratigraphic elements of submerged shorelines and related them to sea level and climatic variation along the east coast of South Africa. Her recent work at UKZN was funded by the NRF and focused on reconstructing Late-Holocene sea-level using salt marsh foraminifera along the southern South African coastline. In partnership with UKZN Geography, she is expanding this work by investigating mangrove environments and the use of diatoms as additional proxies along the eastern coastline of South Africa.
